Dry ski slopes in the UK mimic the attributes of natural, snow-covered slopes and enable you to ski or snowboard before your Monterosa Holiday, here in the resort of Macagnaga.
Dry ski slopes in the UK began in the 1950s as a way to practice skiing without snow – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dry_ski_slope . It was seen as a convenient and effective way to have lots of fun whilst learning and preparing for the real thing.
The earliest slopes were made of a brush-like material, and the first commercial dry ski slopes appeared in Scotland in the late 1950s. Throughout the 70s and 80s, dry slopes spread throughout the UK and Europe, particularly in areas void of reliable winter snowfall.
The materials improved, using water-based or silicone lubricants, and by the 1990s, dry slopes were used by skiing clubs for off-season and youth training.
Into the 21st century, materials such as Snowflex and Neveplast were introduced, offering a smoother, snow-like surface, with better edge grip and superior cushioning for falls.
Likewise, the improvements within the last twenty-five years have given rise to an increase in terrain parks, jumps, and freestyle features, with dry-slope facilities expanding beyond Europe and into the Middle-East, Australia and East Asia.
Although we know them as ‘dry ski slopes’, many have a lubricated system to help increase speed and avoid equipment damage through friction.
The Benefits of using a dry ski slope
Due to the lack of availability of snow in the UK, dry ski slopes are economical and great value for money, especially as they cut down on lesson time once you are with us.
Since our very beginning, Monterosa Holidays has had a close relationship with the dry ski slopes in the UK, and especially with John Nike centres – https://www.jnlplymouth.co.uk/ – with whom we have worked since 2006.
We have always recommended that all clients visit a dry ski slope for a few lessons and/or open ski sessions to learn the basics or utilise the opportunity to refresh what they have already learned.
Here at Monterosa Holidays, we have our very own ski school, “Scuola D Sci Monte Rosa”, with 12 highly skilled instructors, each specialising in a different skillset.
Our ski instructors swear that these dry ski slopes are a game-changer. From the very first lesson, those who visit us with previous dry ski slope experience are so much more advanced on real snow.
It is apparent that those who have experienced UK dry slopes waste no time at all learning to kit up, and they are adept enough to advance through the learner slopes much quicker – https://monterosaholidays.com/index.php/ski-school-experts/ .
The dry slope experience offers the more advanced skier the opportunity to refine balance, precision, and edge control, as the dry facilities can be less forgiving than snow. Skiers find the dry slopes excellent for technical training and race programs.
A real ski-loving community
Being outdoors and closer to nature, the dry slope experience mimics skiing in our resort, giving our guests a realistic taste of a skiing holiday.
There is a real ski-loving community at all of the centres we recommend. You can learn so much there, as the staff are full of helpful advice and tips, preparing you for your first skiing holiday.
They offer open ski sessions, group or private lessons, freestyle events, student events, and many more activities for non-skiers. We love them.
