Italy’s heaviest snowfall in Macagnaga.

Situated in the Piedmont region of Italy, we are blessed with some of the heaviest snowfall in Italy.

It is common knowledge that northern regions of Italy benefit from the heaviest snowfall, making Turin the snowiest city in Italy, sitting at the base of Monte Rosa with Milan being listed as a surprise winter break to experience a white Christmas.

Val d’Isēre in the French Alps and Cervinia, here in Italy, boasts unbeatable snow records. However, if you are destined for the picturesque mountain village of Macagnaga this winter, you are in for extraordinary natural beauty and some of Italy’s heaviest snowfall.

At the time of writing, the ski resort in Macagnaga reported 50cm of snow at an altitude of nearly 3000m and 30cm at a base altitude of 1347m.

February is Macagnaga’s month for the heaviest snowfall

Although there is another 13cm of snow forecast within the coming days, we are still only in January.

February is Macagnaga’s month for the heaviest snowfall, with an average of 22cm falling before March when another 12cm is likely to fall before we even begin to think about springtime adventures in the mountains.

Ski enthusiasts often revere the deep, light powder snow of Utah, USA, in the resorts of Alta and Snowbird. Canada and Japan are also highly regarded when it comes to excellent powder snow conditions at altitude but consistent, dry fluffy flakes are what most skiers yearn for when heading for the slopes.

Following some of the heaviest snowfalls in Italy, Macagnaga currently benefits from the opposite of white powder snow. We have what is known as the dry, hard-packed, gripping snow.

Gripping snow grabs the edge of the skis and allows the skier to turn more easily. It forms when moist snow freezes after a dip in temperature, particularly at night and, although very slippery, ‘gripping snow’ is surprisingly stable and offers an exhilarating experience at speed.

Heading for the slopes?

Winter in Macugnaga becomes a skier’s paradise with the snow-covered mountains of Monte Rosa, offering slopes that are snow-packed winter descents between December and April and green, panoramic landscapes in the warm, lush summer months.
